Macro Photography and Focus Stacking

The mystery of macro photography and focus stacking had always been puzzling a lot of members. So, Wing and Dave E revealed the simplicity of the two techniques in Wings Studio.

Wing used a button badge around 35mm in diameter as an example to photograph close up. As the depth of field did not cover the whole of the badge, he took several images of the badge at the same angle at different focusing distances. Then, Dave E applied focus stacking to the images to create a final image where the whole badge is in focus.

Neville photographed a luxury watch with diamond studs. He also used focus stacking to ensure the whole watch was in focus. Fantastic result!

Alan chose to photograph a small (about 20mm in diameter) ammonite. It was the smallest object of the evening. He got really close with his camera, and got a good set of images to focus stack with. It’s sharp from front to back.
