How it started
In Autumn 2011, Nick Liu, Tommy Wong and Wing W Wong, who share an interest in photography, agreed that they could develop their photographic interests and skills by exchanging knowledge and ideas. They realised If more people who possess a wider range of knowledge and skills come together, they can learn from each other by meeting up on a regular basis.
The first meeting, friends with an interest in photography were invited to meet in Liverpool Chinatown on 8th November 2011. The meeting went so well, they decided to form a structured photographic club, hence the birth of Liverpool Chinatown Photographic Society. Since then, the membership has grown steadily. Today, we have over forty members from many different backgrounds, varying age groups, possessing different levels of photography experiences and skills.
Photography is not just about technical and creative theory, but it’s very much a hands on and practical skill. So, we have activity days and evenings to put the theory to the test. These practical sessions help us to understand the challenges involved in each photography genre. Activities such as group photography outings, studio shoots, and taster sessions.
We also hold workshops to discuss the latest post processing techniques and camera functions, learn to use off camera lighting on location as well as in studio, etc.
At meetings, we have photographic appraisal sessions, where members display their latest work and others can offer constructive comments. Also, members have the opportunity to showcase their work, and sometimes we have talks presented by visiting speakers.
Membership is open to everyone interested in photography, whether you are a hobbyist or professional, young or old, whatever your experience, knowledge or background. All you need is a passion for photography.
The group meets once a month in Wah Sing Chinese Community Centre on Duke Street, Liverpool. Activities and workshops are held in between meetings every month. If you’re interested in joining our friendly and informal group, just get in touch by sending us your message via our ‘contact us‘ page.
